There are 2 activities that are required to be completed for this assignment.   To complete the assignment, type up your answers via a word processor and submit them in the Assignment Drop Box area of WebCT.

 

I.      References:  

A.  Find the  Encyclopedia of sports science / John Zumerchik, editor.

1.     Look up a topic of interest to you.

2.     Use WebCT to submit a summary of the topic to your instructor. 

3.     In the summary, be sure to include a topic title, page(s) number, and a summary of the information.

B.  Find a Reference book on the “Olympics”.

1.     Submit the answers to the following questions to your instructor via WebCT.

a.       In what year was the first Olympics held?  Remember to use the correct notation of (B.C. or A.D.)

b.      In what year was the first “Modern” Olympics held?  In what city and country?

c.      What person is responsible for bringing about the first “Modern” Olympics?

d.      How many Olympics have been held in the U.S.?  List the cities and year.

C.  Find the Oxford English Dictionary.

a.       Look up the definition of “Kinesiology” and “Excellence”. 

b.      Submit both to your instructor using WebCT.

c.      Be ready to discuss both in class.

 

II.      Internet:

 

Using either Internet Explorer or Netscape (or any browser), go to www.google.com.  For the key word, put in “Medicine in Science and Sports”.  From the list provided by the search, select American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) site.  It should start with a title that says “Welcome to ACSM”.  Click on “Publications”, select a “ACSM Position Stands”.  Select one of the position statements, print it, bring it to class, and be ready to discuss it.  You will need to turn this position statement into your instructor with your name on it.

 

III.      Extra Credit:  Videos (20 points)

From the Libraries Home Page, select “Library Catalog”. 

Under the drop down menu for “Format:” select “Audio/Visual”, enter the keyword “Sport” and press the enter key.

From the list provided, find a video of interest to you, watch at least 20-30 minutes of the video in the library or from home. 

Submit a summary via WebCT to your instructor about the video. 

Remember the selections that have the flashing “**” are at Phoenix College.  If you want to get a better video from another college, you can request it.
