Welcome and Introductions (5 minutes)Sandra Wells (Phoenix College)
Welcome back to our first meeting this academic year. We have some new announcements about OLG for this year. A full meeting schedule has been set so you can plan for us, and meeting times have been shifted earlier.
Sandra Wells, co-chair from Phoenix College welcomed everyone. Anna Rosa Lampis co-chair from GateWay Community College was unable to attend. Sandra posed the question, what is the OLG? The answer: a group of people with shared interest in online learning.

Maricopa Learning eXchange (10 min)
Alan Levine (MCLI)
MLX is a collection of learning tools created by faculty and staff within the Maricopa Colleges District. A friendly competition among colleges has a deadline of September 30th. Alan will show examples of learning tools that can be submitted and talk about the great prizes available:
Descriptive Details: Characters
Rochelle Rodrigo (Mesa Community College)
This is a discussion board prompt that will help students to construct vivid descritions for characters in a story.
Interactively Engaging Online Students
John Arle (Phoenix College)
This package shows an example of how online classes can combine the best of teacher, text, and technology. By combining multiple learning modalities, the learner becomes the pilot of his/her own education.
Southwest Indian People - an online assignment
Pam Petty (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
This is a short on-line assignment designed to lead students through an extensive website maintained by the Council of Indiabn Nations.
Tissue and Membrane Puzzle
Angela Ambrosia (Rio Salado College)
This is a puzzle that incorporates critical vocabulary need to know about tissues and membranes.
All MLX Items that contain "Blackboard"
All MLX Items that contain "WebCT"
We also have created a tool that allows a unique URL to generate all the MLX packages created by a person:
David Weaver's MLX Packages
Charlene Thiessen's MLX Packages
In addition, with this meeting and future ones, we are asking all presenters to provide access to their demonstration materials in the MLX.
electronic Portfolio Summer Institute (ePSI) at Chandler-Gilbert (40 min) David Weaver and Bill Mullaney (Chandler-Gilbert)
Hear about the reasons and outcomes for a June summer institute for faculty at Chandler-Gilbert, where a group joined the "ePSI Generation". The initial workshop allowed participants to brainstorm ideas and issues regarding electronic portfolios and also to experience three different ePortfolios tools, including one developed by the local technical wizards. Faculty participants were "assigned" to develop a working ePortfolio with one of the three tools and share it at a "show and tell" session.
- Four day program in June for residential and adjunct faculty "join the ePSI generation!"
- David Weaver shared e-portfolio used in his physics courses, where he provides much of his course materials. The students keep a journal of what they learn in each class. David uses the "blog" tool to describe what he thought he taught in class, and students are asked to "blog" about what they learned. David is anxious to see how they compare. He also has students use video to dcoument 3 hours of class (using a 1 hour tape), edited down to 10 minute moves, also posted to his ePortfilo.
David also described the Honda "cog" commercial, used as an inspiration for student's "Rube Goldberg" machine projects (as well as a funny paradoy of the Honda ad).
- Bill Mullaney shared his e-portfolio for his writing classes. His portfolio was created as a model for his students to use as they develop their own. It is used to showcase students' work in his English courses and uses slide shows as well. The students post essays and captions to their own e-portfolio.

Break! (15 min) all
Enjoy some snacks while networking.
Other ePortfolio Systems (35 min) Alan Levine (mcli)
Learn about other electronic portfolio systems in used at Maricopa and elsewhere. Alan suggested investigating these to start a conversation about how we might use electronic portfolios and what they should provide.
As you can see there are many directions being taken with ePortfolios (not to mention new features likely coming to Blackboard and WebCT). To get involved, contact your local Ocotillo Chair or join the Ocotillo eportfolio listserv.
Problem-Solving Corner (10 min)
all
This is a new regular OLG meeting feature-- your opportunity to bring a specific question about online tools or methods, or to ask for help from the participants in dealing with any issue of using online learning technologies.
This time we discussed the issues, merits, and problems of using timed tests in a course management system -the idea came from a nursing faculty who felt students needed more experience taking standardized exams (which are timed) and wondered if the same should be done for tests in WebCT.
Door Prizes (5 min) all
Stick around to see if you win one of the prizes (you must register on the sign in sheet and be present to win).
