Copyright in the Online Environment

Hazel Davis (Rio Salado)
Hazel will provide an overview of copyright issues distilled from the Dialogue Day she faciliatated April 15, 2005

Many faculty are unclear about permissible uses of third party materials in the online environment or the process required to request copyright permissions. This presentation will clarify these issues and provide information regarding permissible uses of materials, as well as the copyright permissions process.

Quick Overview of Creative Commons

Alan Levine (MCLI)
Alan gave a quick tour of Creative Commons and sites that use them. Creative Commons is a "movement" that provides an alternative to traditionL copyright "You cannot use for another 75 years" to something that allows content creators to allow re-use of their work with minimal resitrctions. Creative Commons removes the grayness of use since if it is licensed for re-use, you do not have to bother requestion permission and there is no ambiguity of determining fair use.

• Finding Free Stuff - a workshop provided for students at ASU and for a grouop in New Zealand
  • Media Sources list a number of sites to find the stuff
• Creative Commons
• Creative Commons licenses for content creators
  • Creative Commons search- an easy to use search tool for all kinds of media and content
  • Creative Commons for Education highlights a number of licensed collections of specific interest to educators such as the Speech Accent Archive, Physics textbooks, and Public Library of Science
• Flickr photo sharing site has a specific section of Creative Commons licenced photos you can downlo and use for presentations, web sites, etc.
  • A presentation I did at Penn State University in July 2005, Living @ the Crossroads of IT & ID extensively used photos from the Flickr Creative Commons collection, see how the photos a regiven attribution.
• All Maricopa Learning eXchange packages are automatically licensed with Creative Commons, see example Package 704 under "Supplements".
