Chandler-Gilbert's New CTL
Marybeth Mason
Chandler-Gilbert is in the process of creating a space for a new center. It will provide up-to-date faculty development and technological resources to make instruction more meaningful to the students at CGCC.
Marybeth was inspired after visiting the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center at Salt Lake Community College. There, the structure is faculty with partial release time server as Associate Directors of the FTLC in specilized areas such as Service Learning, International Education, Learning Communities, supported by staff and technology specialists. Marybeth realized that Chandler-Gilbert has faculty already on release time to lead various faculty development agendas, so the new model is to coordinate them via the new CTL.
They have several instructional initiatives that will be supported under this new umbrella. They include: Faculty Development Coordination, Instructional Technology, Service Learning, Learning Communities, and more. The structure is shown on the new Faculty Development web site, where the options allow one to view by the faculty leading the agendas or by the topics themselves.
The future CTL will house a desk for Sharon Fagan, Faculty Staff Development Coordinator, a desk for Tom Foster/Julie Magadan, Instructional Technologists, a small conference space for meetings, the STAR student space, and the Professional Library. It also has a sink/kitchen area. Total space is about 550 square feet. This is all being done with existing resources. The campus master plan calls for a larger, new area, perhaps 2500 square feet.
Also on the web site, listed under "events", you can see the two summer institutes being offered
- e-PSI/ electronic-Portfolio Summer Institute
- Summer Institute on Service Learning
We took a brief look at the prototype ePortfolio system being developed for the first summer institute.
Chandler-Gilbert's STAR (Student Technology Assistance Resource) Program
agdalena Soto, STAR student
The STAR program was created as a way to aid faculty or staff with specific technology issues. The program currently has 3 (20 hr) per week students. The dollars to fund this program come from unspent Faculty/Staff Development funds throughout the campus.
Some of the projects that the STAR students do include:
- Personal web sites for faculty, see examples:
- Adding original art work to the web
- Digital photography - of college activities, of the campus, of individuals
- Re-touching of photographs
- Banners for departments web sites or Blackboard courses, e,g,:

- Graphics - for letterhead, campus signs, floor plans, etc.
- Scanning of documents for faculty
College Sharing
(all)
Scottsdale - SCC has a new Teaching and Learning Center that is co-located with the Faculty-in-Residence Center. A "one-stop-shop" that allows them to work with faculty one-on-one.
GateWay - At the present time, all initiatives are at a stand still. They tentatively have space that is effectively the size of 3 classrooms. Their Learning Technology Services would also be housed in this new space. All is pending hiring of these two directors. The CTL director would be a faculty position with an extended summer contract and no expectations of teaching and the LTS Director would be a MAT position.
Mesa - They want to be all things to all people. The initiatives grew from a faculty-led symposium. This symposium asked the faculty what they wanted to do and this led to workshops on everything from WebCT to How to Use Powerpoint. They are still struggling with these single events, they want to eventually go to a longer commitment for faculty. These will evolve into a "tug" that is a once-a-week course that will go for at least 8 weeks. They are also trying to figure out how to integrate Red Mountain into these services. They have had much more foot traffic this year, from individual appointments, walk-ins, and workshops. They have had a workshop scheduled just about every day. Donna asked ideas for how to better track who uses CTL services (enforce sign-in sheets, give away prizes to those that sign in, electronic check in?, electronic event regsitration with follow-up survey?).
District - This group was formed, thanks to Dr. Anna Solley, in as a member of the national New Media Centers. This Consortium is also affiliated with other colleges/universities, corporations, and several museums. Our affiliation provides the colleges with a discount to New Media's annual conference as well as software discounts (in limited quantity, so we need ideas how to share this benefit). Because of salary savings and having the Ocotillo Retreat in town, this year we are able to send six Maricopa representatives to the NMC Summer Conference.
The MLX race will now be held every 6 months, please continue to encourage participation at your colleges. Some new options at this web site include exapanded search capabilities to find packages by the names of people involved, the discipline area, the title. There are new short cut links to display packages according to discipline, and the colleges can easily build a link that will pull up just the items associated with their college (e.g. Chandler-Gilbert). Furthermore, there are new "syndication" tools so a college can have its content listed in the MLX appear in a dynamically updated spot on their own college web site. There is some new experimentation with technology that relates to Learning Objects and weblogs...
Future
The group decided to continue to have these meetings next year and that they would encourage their Faculty/Staff Development Coordinators to attend.
