  • 1:00pm "Lessons Learned from a New CTL" (John Lampignano, GateWay) Not only my perspective but updayes from all CTL directors about their past year and projected plans for next year.

    • GateWay - Have developed a mission statement. The hope is to identify the direction of the CTL. Currently designed to provide in-services and training for faculty. Support of BlackBoard 6.0 is currently a major push. Also supporting new faculty orientation and training. The center provides one on one support covering basic course management to designing a hybrid course.
    • Estrella Mountain - The CTL will now include the "Information Commons" which will drive e-learning and the CTL is becoming an academic division. The "help desk" will support programs, not just technical support but will be more customer service oriented. The staff, lab techs, will be proactive and offer follow-up. Roger will be a division chair instead of a director. The focus of the center will be on building content in hybrid and online course. They will be creating "foundation courses."
    • Glendale - The Innovation Center supports technology, research, and implementation. They are assessing the secondary outcomes of technology literacy testing, options for Department Chair evaluations online, and supporting the instructional palette and campus wireless initiative.
    • Scottsdale - The center is still functioning without a budget. They called themselves the "virtual CTL." Currently exploring new ways to do more with less money, i.e. grants with faculty on teaching and learning.
    • Rio Salado - Multiple partnerships for their new course management system with major industry leaders including Microsoft, Dell, and QuestionMark. Current programming work being done with Microsoft staff on site and RIO programmers to change the way courses are offered.
    • Mesa - Over 6000 recorded "interactions" with faculty by the CTL since July 2003. Naomi Story is trying to get increased funding for center. The goal is to serve the masses through one time "quick fixes" and extended learning experiences.
    • South Mountaiin - They are hiring a full-time person to direct the CTL. 100% of their adjunct faculty go to the CTL for assistance. Developing foundation courses with the support of the division chairs. Chairs send faculty to the CTL for help.
  • 1:30pm "The restructuring of Ocotillo" (Alan levine, MCLI) Describe the new format and plans for the four initiatives for next year's "Action Groups":
    • Hybrid COurses
    • Learning Objects
    • Elecrtonic Portfolios
    • Emerging Technologies
The May 18, 2004 Ocotillo Retreat will be at the Desert Botanical Garden with special guest Diana Oblinger. Check with your local Ocotillo Chair to be part of your college's team at the retreat. Activities there will help shape the direction and activities for next year's "Action Groups". br>
MCLI has made available to all Maricopa faculty a copy of the Chandler-Gilbert developed eportfolio tool available from http://eport.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/

The Online Learning Group (OLG) had 7 very successful meetings this year- a rep from each college will meet May 5 to plan for next year's meetings. Please publicize the now open OLG Survey to help gather feedback from people that attended (or avoided!) the meetings this year.
  • 1:40pm "The Year of the Adjunct Faculty" (all) an idea being discussed among the college faculty developers. What is the role the college centers can play in making that a successful campaign?

Group discussed opportunities for improvement in adjunct faculty involvement. Solutions offered were better publicity of Maricopa and non-Maricopa events and developing a calendar of scheduled training and events offered for adjunct faculty. Technology Training Services provides training for adjunct after hours and on weekends to work around busy schedules. MCC has a café approach for professional development transcript where faculty can earn "points" toward $$.

The group advocates adjunct pay based on training and experience.

Group discussed developing a place to share all centersŐ calendars that would be available online for adjunct. Shaunna Jagneaux offered to report on what the new District purchased scheduling software "Resource 25" might offer; Alan also offered to build a possible shared calendar based on the MCLI database driven calendar-- a rep from each campus would still need to enter events.

Would like to bring in Adjunct Faculty Association President, Tara Bohinc, to discover specific needs of adjunct faculty to drive direction of the group.
  • 2:15pm "Where do we go from here?" (all) An open discussion on what direction this group should take next year.

The group decided to meet in September at the District Office to share strategic plans and calendars. We will examine idea of two meetings per semester and developing an adjunct faculty "survival" or "success" guide.
  • 2:30pm Adjourn
