Summer 1997 Ideas
So what are faculty chairs to do in the summer? Here is our suggested list of ideas, as always, open to discussion. We are willing to schedule individual meetings along the way, but consider a group (VCN???) meeting as noted on the timeline.

  1. Use the technology! If anyone has not caught on, we are promoting the web as a tool of communication, research, and information. It's not the only one we'll use, but it sure can do a lot. We'll be willing to meet individually with you for some coaching, just contact Alan Levine. We most strongly encourage you to try using our web discussion board rather than A1 so we can more easily archive the results.

  2. Attend the AAHE Institute Dr. de los Santos has agreed to cover the fees to attend the July 12-15 AAEE Institute in Phoenix (see http://www.aahe.org/97tltrsi.htm). It might also be worthwhile to sign on to the AAHE listserv (see: http://www.aahe.org/aahesgit.htm)

  3. Study the AAHE Workbook There will not be a quiz ;-)

  4. How will your Roundtable "fit in"? How can the roundtable concept be used within the context of your existing systems/committees? There is no "right" answer. Think about participation, scheduling meetings, locations, activities.

  5. Think about a Roundtable Web Site. Plan on setting up a web site information area at your college. Discover how it is done, and who can support you.

  6. Use your own tech system to report the retreat activity results Sumarize the flip chart summaries from the first activity at the retreat, ("Three Questions: Where are We know, Where do want to go, How do we get there"). Make this available from your web site (the retreat web page has some pre-built links that will point to the individual college pages that you will develop). In doing this, document what it took to create the web pages as well as to make them available at your campus.

  7. Design a Maricopa "Directory" We at MCLI have the means to easily create a searchable directory of technology uses at Maricopa-- we ask you to help us shape what information needs to be included and then spend some time during the summer putting in entries from your college (see next item for an example).

  8. Add to the T&L database As an example of such as system, we have a web directory of about 400+ Internet sites that are examples of specific instructional uses of the web. You can explore the information from http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tl/ and then use the form at http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tl/sub.html to add entries from your own college.

  9. What is an IT plan? What should be the basic elements of an college IT plan? Use resources to research. We set up a page of online IT plans and references (http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/technoplan/) and it would help to have some volunteers look at some of these sites and critique them.

  10. Who is our competition? There are corporate entities that are already offering "courses" many of them via distance learning. We set up a page with a few examples at http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/compete.html that we can use as a basis for researching.
