Update by each campus of activities since last meeting

• Rosemary Kesler, GWCC
  Gateway's Roundtable is now on the web, which includes meeting minutes, all are working on their projects, and are having 5 minute technology presentations before each meeting.

• Mary Long, SMCC
  The focus at South Mountain is NCA, but Ocotillo is also a priority, working on a project with Math/Science division because their faculty want to know more about the web in terms of development so they can post their own web pages. They are hoping to get more interactive with the use of the web, so they can move from information to interactive learning. Working on how to integrate Ocotillo with existing areas that work with technology. Administration is supportive with linking it with ECT. Working with software that recognizes voices and doing data testing. Web page is up.

• Ted Wolter, CGCC
  Working on web site with a student worker. Committee meets 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. Have begun to strategize about an agenda - talked about the instructional technology plan, what to include in it; working on improving relationships between faculty and staff; perhaps developing faculty/student showcases once a year; looking into developing courses on the web; moving to new buildings - hoping to optimize their use; looking at restructuring our committee meetings - making it more a working meeting vs. a reporting meeting possibly by breaking up into sub committees that would report back to larger committee; still tossing around ideas about how to proceed this year and instructional technology is a big agenda item.

• Alan Levine, District Office
  For those working on web development, one of the articles in the Laby/Forum will be featuring what PC is doing with a product called WebCT, a web tool which is run on the web for instructors to create course materials. They are currently trying it out and putting it through its paces.

  Web development question - It isnÕt as easy developing pages ... Is there a way to make it easier? The best answer(s) are to either find a student to do the grunt work for you or purchase a higher end program.

• Pat Case, RSC
  Meeting every Friday at 7:00 a.m., most of the focus of the last few weeks has been getting the new semester off the ground. 720 Internet students as of last week. Goals - what does level 2 in internet courses look like and what kinds of guidelines do we want in the use of graphics, video, sound - what part do they play instructionally; Conducted focus groups with students to get their reactions to the Internet courses and Distance Learning - very helpful and thought provoking; this semester they are piloting pre and post tests in 25 courses; by the middle of this semester we should have 130 Internet courses; Web page should be up soon. As for web pages, Rio has a Web group that does the work for faculty - 4 instructional keys that they have been working with for 8 years - incorporated these into Internet courses - looking into the use of icons [when to use them and what type - thumbnails, so they can use more graphic representations in the courses].

• Jeanne Franco, PVCC
  Able to set-up link from Ocotillo main area; put up the first draft of the technology strategic plan - was presented to the all employee meeting and feedback was compiled. We will take this feedback and make the revisions to issues and goals identified - then it will go to the Strategic Planning Committee for approval. Once approved, the next step will be to visit departments and selected campus groups to further everyoneÕs role in the technology process. We did not identify activities to change these goals - identified activities to undertake and to get people on campus excited and involved in the process, at the faculty retreat we did a collaborative activity - we plan on doing with the PSA group later this month and the MAT group as well. We created 5 roundtables [7 - 10 people each], selected the five issues for Ôneeds assessmentÕ for technology training on campus, another team to look at and draft policies for issues like: computer replacement, what software are we going to support, a1 or web server account creation.

• Bob Albury, GCC
  Working on web page with Karen Scwalm ... first meeting of the year on September 9th. They have their instructional palette up and running [software that students can use personally - MS Office, 10 MB of memory, bookmarks on the server etc.] Pilot project that might have gotten out of hand - need to redefine what pilot means, started with some business courses, but now have social science et al. Each student is given their own account. Five- year plan that is up and going for 3 years - running smoothly - just added PE department to plan, in which they will be getting computers on a regular basis. They have answered the computer replacement problem [at least for Glendale]. Just getting everything up and going. One project - our dean would like to see a plan for all faculty to get computers - similar to 5 year plan. Also, looking to link software to the plan [new computers = new software to run with it]. Because it is getting so big, they may go to a have/have not system for technology [already have a tier system that distinguishes the higher from lower technology users], when the palette came into play - it went more for the higher vs. the lower users.

• Doug Sawyer, SCC
  Web page is up. Met with president a few weeks ago and identified that Ocotillo would be a priority for SCC this semester. First meeting is today [9/3]. At this point we have an early form of what PVCC has. Has 40 statements gathered from existing plans and members of committee that can be defined as tentative goals and objectives. Will discuss statements today and determine which ones are applicable to SCC and which arenÕt. Will discuss over 4 weeks, which will include committee members to go out to their areas and get feedback about statements. Have a timeline to come up with draft by November 14. Next phase would be to develop the statements into the details and activities and what needs to be accomplished. Split up statements and have committee members responsible for developing the ideas with the help of their departments. Planning demo at meeting to show how ethernet can be used, with overheads that will be shown from computer to show capability of ethernet. Already discussing with faculty senate and with other campus organizations on how this will be presented to campus and weÕve discussed an open/panel type discussion at January meeting.

• Chris MacCrate, EMCC
  Want to focus attention on faculty and teaching and learning. Attempt to establish a faculty center on T&L following the Mesa CTL model and something local that we can focus here and use other colleges as support only - underway now. Want to focus on new faculty [now have 7 new faculty - which is a lot = 33% increase]. Working on getting all the departments at college to re-assign 3 hours of all new faculty time to commit to center activities. Have gotten full support and first will do a series of workshops on survival strategies, getting faculty used to the different technologies at college - get everyone on a even plane as quickly as possible. Also establishing a faculty luncheon series where we are going to have a structured agenda and discuss the art of teaching. Every other month there will be a luncheon with a presentation by a faculty member about what they are doing in classroom - using technology or not. Also discussing what works and what doesnÕt work - will bring in the strengths and weaknesses of present technology infrastructure that college has to support T&L. Also identified 2 faculty members for roundtable activities - a cross functional team that supports faculty in the development of curriculum project that in this case incorporates multimedia. Playing around with web course development tools [Web course in a box] trying to determine if this is a good template program for easy course layout. Also working with ASU on ÔInstructional Innovation NetworkÕ [web based collection of teaching resources from around the country] - identified liaison specialist from different areas - everything from case teaching to instructional technology to cooperative learning to writing across the curriculum - each one of these liaisons is responsible for a page on this network - EMCC is hosting site, Chris is the liaison for instructional technology section. This will hopefully be a nation wide collection of teaching resources for these specific areas. It will be linked through Ocotillo re Alan.

Discussion of Development of a timeline by each campus
Timeline - everyone should put it on their web site, that would be helpful to Manny and Alan - they are willing to attend meetings at campuses.

Do we want to be working towards some basic common elements of MCCCD technology plans or do we want to make sure we are hitting all the important areas of support, access, faculty development, web course tools, and hardware/software replacement budget etc.?
