Technology Plans Common Elements (Finalized?)
Alan briefly went over the Common Elements handout, accessible from the website:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/plans.html
This lists the 12 common elements decided upon at the last chairs meeting; the drop down menus under each "button" will include links to each college plan. We will be create a web form for the chairs to add/update the relevant links to their own plans.
Manny stated that even though the Ocotillo group will no longer be focusing on the Technology
Plans, each chair/roundtable should continue to evolve and update their plans at their colleges.
Bertha shared that Vice Chancellor of Business Services Rufus Glasper is leading a strategic planning committee that is in it's first stages of forming the district's overall strategic plan. They
will be working on the process and a who/what/when
for the next bond election. Questions from the chairs: How does this fit into the college plans?
Where do the Technology Plans fit into the District-wide
plan? The group decided that they would like a representative from this committee to attend a future
Ocotillo Chairs meeting.
Retreat 2000
Manny asked if anyone would like to be the lead chair for Retreat planning.
What do we want to do this year?
Recommendations - 2 days (1 day on the "east side", 1 day on the "west side" with several
colleges collaborating to put the event on); provide hands-on
activities, showcases, and/or show new technology buildings, possibly a version of the Café
discussions like last year. MCC STA program? EMCC requested
interest in showcasing their new technology in their new teaching facility building. Rosemary suggested their new
auditorium at Gateway - it has data ports at each chair.
Potential Ocotillo 2000 Retreat Topics:
- How do we keep the money flowing? Sharing successful models - What is working at each college.
Money and technology are perpetually intertwined -
restructure budget to cover all items associated with technology (hardware, staffing, etc.); How do
you budget when you are using so many different budgets
for the different items?
- New technologies (Wearable technology? Wireless?)
Bertha asked, "Who is our audience and what is our goal for the retreat?"
Our audience is faculty, staff, district employees, and students - basically anyone interested in
technology and its use with Teaching and Learning. One of our
goals is to go away with more technology awareness.
Retreat 99 recommendations
For background see:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/action/99ideas.html
We should start with what is needed at each campus. Listed below are priority items from each Issue with a first round of suggestions. The item numbers refer to the worksheet distributed at the previous meeting.
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/xyz-summary.pdf
- Assessment of Learning with Technology
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/report1.html
Item #3 - General College Experience Survey - upon graduation.
The group would to work with the District Institutional Researchers to come up with a district-wide document that each college can integrate into their Assessment
plans and it should relate to the Board goals. Deadline suggestion -- by May 2000.
- Access to Technology
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/report2.html
Item #1 - Funding
How does the budget work? How are spending categories defined? We need to refine how
to finance technology within Maricopa budget constraints, or should we be pursuing other avenues?
Deadline suggestion - 2 years from now.
- Technology Staffing
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/report3.html
Item #2 - Establish a ratio of technology to staff and #5 - Equitable staffing formula based on ratios (students/computers, computer staff/computers, etc.).
What is it that we want to count? Which other colleges/organizations have already done this?
Are their ratios working? Who writes the job descriptions? How do you initiate change?
- Technology Cost/Replacement
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/report4.html
Item #5 - Fiscal strategies (functions, operational, leases, fees etc.) and #8 - Prioritize equitable
distribution of technology purchase/replacement.
How do you decide which project/program is more of a priority? Propose a formula to come
up with for technology support of faculty and staff. There
are different technology needs depending on the department and discipline. Are we looking far
enough into the future for replacement?
- Faculty/Staff Development for Technology
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/ocotillo/retreat99/report5.html
Item #7 - Professional development (Incentives, internships, etc. ) and #11 - Providing training
teams for on-site training. Richard Shortridge volunteered to come up with recommendations for professional
growth.
3rd Millennium Committee
Relating to the issue of Faculty Development, Pat Case shared a draft of a memo which is going out to many groups with a goal of defining the future roles of the faculty of the next millennium. Pat first asked for feedback on the memo as well as asking that the chairs spend a part of the February 2000 meeting discussing this topic. Review a copy of the memo at:
