Institutional Research & Strategic Outcomes Assessment (IR/SOA) (Margaret Hogan and Shiji Shen)
Margaret Hogan began the discussion with a little history of the department. It was created by Dr. de los Santos 1 year ago to work on the Governing Board Goals and Measures. Working on these at the district level will translate out to the colleges. They are currently working on the Governing Board Goals and will begin to work on the Measures this coming January. She passed out several handouts, one of which listed what each college was doing in regards to Assessment. There also is a District Student Academic Achievement Assessment Committee (This is a district level group that is working with the Deans of Instruction) that is working on campus assessment issues. Margaret's office also works closely with the Institutional Researchers.
The IR/SOA department has several district level items that they can support this year:
- Employer surveys to determine satisfaction with the preparation of Maricopa College graduates
- graduate follow-up surveys to determine their satisfaction with technology experience
- transfer student follow-up survey to determine their satisfaction with advisement/transfer process after completing the AGEC or a degree.
The second one was thought to be most connected to the Ocotillo group's efforts. Several of colleges have participated in student satisfaction surveys that allow them to add customized questions (might include technology ones). From her experience data from about 6 of the colleges is sufficient to provide a district-wide picture.
Margaret felt that this was a good place to start in regards to the chair's idea of an overall student satisfaction 'survey'. This might in the end be done as focus groups, surveys, or sampled surveys.
What kinds of information would the Ocotillo chairs like to question? Suggestions included:
- Do students truly get what they need from Maricopa in regards to their continuing education and/or a job?
- Did technology enhance their learning?
- Were they exposed to an adequate level of technology to be able to function in the workplace?
- What kinds of technology are they using in the workplace?
- Did they learn the basic skills to use technology in the workplace?
- Did they have to relearn the required technology once they got the job?
- What are the basic skills needed for a job, are they technology based?
- They are problem solving, people skills, reading, writing, etc.
- What about transfer students? Are we preparing them to study/work in their new environment?
Brad Kincaid said that the MCC-TLTR group was working on an Assessment element that has a 'sample' survey that may help.
Here are some possible questions/items on the satisfaction survey:
- Have the student list their major.
- Are some disciplines using technology more than others?
- Which disciplines prepared them better in regards to technology? What can we learn from theses disciplines?
- In what disciplines did you use technology to enhance your learning?
- Which technology skills were most useful in preparing you for work (list them)?
- What are you doing in your job that requires these skills? Examples include: World Wide Web for research, presentation systems, ability to communicate in writing and by e-mail, and use a computer to sign up for classes, write papers, find out financial aid status, or create a spreadsheet.
- Are the technologies discipline specific?
- What skills would they have liked to learn?
- Transfer students: How does the Community College compare to their University in terms of technology, access and staff?
- Are we providing an adequate/appropriate technology to our ADA students?
- What is the value of your experience with computers/technology?
- Was your access to technology adequate?
The chairs would like the survey to focus on computer technology related topics with feedback on other technologies. M. Hogan will create a draft and send it to the chairs for feedback by the end of January. In the
meantime, the chairs will go to their roundtables to get some more questions for the survey.
Professional Development recommendations (Richard Shortridge)
Richard Shortridge was unable to attend this meeting, he will share his recommendations at the next chairs meeting.
Retreat 2000
The chairs liked the idea of a 2 day event.
The potential sites are Estrella Mountain and Mesa.
How can we include students in these activities? (panel discussions? STA programs?)
General topics suggested included:
- Successful models The chairs would like to showcase the successful models in the issue areas, plus:
- They also would like to see a few companies come out to showcase new technologies.
- New campus facilities (new Center for Teaching and Learning, EMCC; new Science Building, MCC).
- MCC-STA program (Student Panel discussion?)
- E-books
- Testing Online
- WebCT with Prentice Hall content
- BlackBoard and how are the different campuses using the Blackboard software?
- Possibly a link with Rick Effland in China.
- Technology and the budget. The chairs liked to see a Café session(s) for this topic, possibly with Rufus Glasper opening the discussion.
- Retreat '99 updates What is being done with these recommendations? The majority of these might be summarized handouts.
Manny would like to see the chairs pair up again on the Retreat '99 topics, they are: Assessment of Learning with Technology, Access to Technology, Technology Staffing, Technology Cost/Replacement, and Faculty/Staff Development for Technology. He would like the pairs to go to their campuses to find out what they are doing in regards to each topic. Who has been successful? How are they dealing with the problems that have come up? Poster sessions and/or demonstrations may come from these updates.
Blackboard update (Alan Levine)
Alan reported that Roger Yohe has agreed to be the Maricopa faculty leader for the Blackboard group. He will try and get people together on a monthly basis to discuss topics, issues and what new things have been developed. Blackboard will hold a regional meeting here on March 3, 2000.
Next Meeting
Friday, February 11, 2000, 2:00 - 3:30 PM
District office, MCLI's Big Kahuna room
Manny urged us to do more communication on topics between meetings, especially since they next on is not until February 11. Some requested pieces of information he is requesting from the chairs include:
- Responses from the college roundtables regarding possible technology assessment questions (by mid to late January) so Margaret and Shiji can present a draft before or at the February 2000 meeting.
- Suggestions for retreat 2000 activities and potential technology vendors
Also, Tracy will send a copy of all the handouts to those who were unable to attend this meeting.
Agenda Items:
- Review draft of technology assessment
- Review and clarify retreat activities, expectations
- Faculty of the Future discussion (Pat Case, Rio)
- Faculty Professional Growth Report (Richard Shortridge)
Have a fun and safe holiday!
