 ePortConsortium
Following the interest in ePortfolios at the October 2002 Dialogue Day, Maricopa has joined a consortium with IUPUI, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, UCLA, Penn State, and Bowling Green University that is aiming to develop an eportfolio system. Visit the ePortConsortium site for more details on the project and visit epsilen for information about the software.
Note: As of December 2003, our participation in the ePortConsortium is over. We had little interest form faculty in using this system.
Maricopa's Plans
Our membership in the consortium provides us a test version of the epsilen software and the ability to not only provide input to the developers, but to customize any or all of it to meet our needs. Our future direction depends on the feedback we get starting in our pilot phase of June 2003.
Anyone at Maricopa can register to get a test account via our online request form. Once completing the form, your account will be created within 24 hours, and access instructions will be emailed back to you.
On your first login you will be prompted to enter information about yourself; all items are not required (only the ones in red), and this can be edited at any time.
Your primary tasks are to begin uploading files, images, etc to your "myDocuments" area. Think of this as the library that contains all of the media files you will use elsewhere in building your eportfolio. The MyArtifacts area is more like a place to put and describe samples of your best work, and you can select to link to any file stored in your MyDocuments or to any external web address.
One of the more important areas is the "MAP" which is a matrix that can customized as an area for storing documents, reflections, descriptions of courses taken. It is our task to try and define at least a general format for this matrix (for now it is a very basic one column that corresponds to Governing Board outcomes for general academic studies). It is passible in this system to customize this, and to create other ones, say a different matrix for each college, or matrices for disciplines or departments.
Our warning is to not take this system for how it appears now. We can change anything in regards to its appearance and functionalities. Your input over this summer is going to direct our future development and support for this system. We will be following up with some surveys or phone calls to those that use the system, and we may look at setting up some pilots with selected classes of students in Fall 2003.
