| What is your discipline and the title of your course? |
| Computer Information Systems, CIS105 "Survey of Computer Information Systems"
| What makes your course a hybrid? |
| I use Blackboard to present supplementary materials for my face-to-face lectures and labs. My lectures are presented online in HTML format for review and for those who might miss a class. Links to pertinent web sites allow a student to further research a topic of interest. Course materials, including hands-on lab files are available 24x7, along with sample PDF documents for self-review.
| What kind of activities do students do in out of class time? |
| Course labs, critical thinking/scenario assignments for extra credit or Honors
| Where do your students do their out of work activities? |
| Most do it from home or office, but several do use our computer labs
| What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid? |
| With several students missing class due to athletics or illness, I felt it imperative to make in-class materials available outside of class as well. Furthermore, in developing a completely online version of CIS105, it seemed foolish to not make the materials available to my face-to-face students as well.
| How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled? |
| The course meets all regularly scheduled class times (same as any f2f course).
| What technologies support your hybrid? |
| I use Blackboard and have created my lectures as mini web sites within the Blackboard framework (i.e. several interlinked HTML pages with graphics). For one lecture I created a slide show (executable application developed in Visual Basic) to illustrate how a floppy drive works and data is stored on it in a more visual way. I have made optional study guides available in the form of crossword puzzles. Quizzes are taken online but in class, allowing the student to get instant feedback of their performance.
| What worked? What did not? |
| Students love the 24x7 access to files and materials. The sample documents of printed assignments have greatly helped students in completing their assignments with correct formatting, etc.
| What would you do over/different? |
| A couple of the online lectures consist largely of external links, primarily due to time constraints in development. I would like to re-write these to include more original content.
| How were you supported? |
| I received development time to create the online section of CIS105. I did not utilize any outside expertise or assistance. |
