| What is your discipline and the title of your course? |
| Psychology; PSY101 - Introduction to Psychology
| What makes your course a hybrid? |
It is taught in our Flex-Express format.
"Classes meet a limited number of times as specified. Students are required to attend class sessions and complete the course according to the dates listed under each course in the schedule. Instructors will provide learning activities which include additional assignments to be completed outside of class by the specified End Date."
| What kind of activities do students do in out of class time? |
| Textbook reading, companion text website, class (course management)discussion boards, videotape series viewing, multimedia presentations, online PowerPoint presentations, and in-class experiential workshops.
| Where do your students do their out of work activities? |
| Most of the students do their work on their home or work computers, and then come to campus to use the Microcomputer Commons computers, the library and the testing center.
| What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid? |
| I have this course as a f2f class, an online class and thought it was time to offer the course to the Flex Express students.
| How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled? |
| 6 Scheduled Fridays from 9:00 - 11:20
| What technologies support your hybrid? |
| Blackboard is the course management tool. I have developed PowerPoint lectures for the web, I have developed assignments around the Companion Textbook website delivered by the Publisher, and have a publishers CD-ROM available if the students donāt have the Flash technology on their machine.
| What worked? What did not? |
| I offer this course as a "late start" course and many students sign up without knowing it's a hybrid course. The see that they only have to meet 6 times and think that all the work is done on those 6 days. This is a great format for the working student who has strong reading and writing skills. It does not work for students who are not self starters nor do not have strong study skills. All of the technologies have helped support the student learning. I also have them write their papers and then take them to the Writing Center for peer review before they submit them to me.
| What would you do over/different? |
| I have tried sending Orientation letters out a week ahead of time or within a day of them registering for the course. They throw the letters out, don't read them and come to class not understanding the hybrid nature of the course. I have worked with the Advisement Center so that they understand the nature of the class so that they advise the students of the exact nature of the course.
| How were you supported? |
| I am supported by the Center for Distance Learning, the Microcomputer Commons, the PVCC Library and the PVCC Testing Center. I have developed all of the online material but receive support from the campus IRTS team, campus Trainer and the District support team for hosting Blackboard for our campus.
