What is your discipline and the title of your course?
My discipline is education. This course is used for a teacher preparation program, EDU276 Classroom Management
What makes your course a hybrid?
The course is offered in an e-learning format -- online. Students are also required to go into a K-12 classroom of their choice and complete 20 clock hours of a practicum. This gives them a "hands-on" experience.
What kind of activities do students do in out of class time?
When completing the practicum students spend time observing the classroom and tutoring children in a small group of one-on-one. Some classroom teachers ask our students to do other classroom activities such as: grading papers, creating bulletin boards, conducting mini-lessons, etc. Our students find this experience to be invaluable.
Where do your students do their out of work activities?
They are allowed to complete their practicum in any private, charter or public K-12 schools setting as long as it is under the direction of a certified teacher. In addition to the class time our teacher prep complete a practicum form. The purpose of the form is to give them some direction as they observe the classroom. They complete the questions on the practicum form as well as write a reflection describing their experience. They receive feedback from their online instructor who is an experienced classroom teacher.
What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid?
The online course provides the coursework information. The practicum experience provides students with a "real world" exposure to what it is really like to teach school. It is well known that you can not train people for a human-interaction profession with no human interaction. The hybrid format is critical in the success of creating highly qualified teachers.
How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled?
Rio Salado College finds the practicum site for our students. EDU276 Classroom Management requires 20 clock hours in a K-12 setting.
What technologies support your hybrid?
Rio Salado has built their own online system of delivering coursework.
What worked? What did not?
We have been very satisfied with this online course as well as the practicum requirement for the course. We pay each of our classroom teachers a small stipend for opening their classroom to our students and providing them with feedback. The teachers are given the opportunity to touch the future by training future teachers.
What would you do over/different?
I would continue this process. In fact we have continued by designing most of our teacher prep courses in this format.
How were you supported?
We were initially supported through Proposition301 money. The college now supports our online courses through their systems approach. The entire college supports the teacher prep program and our hybrid format.
