What is your discipline and the title of your course?
BPC/CIS
BPC101AA - Introduction to Microcomputers
What makes your course a hybrid?
Many students complete part of the course in class and the other part online.
What kind of activities do students do in out of class time?
This is a beginning computer skills and concepts course. They complete their textbook lessons and assignments outside of class, and turn in their work by email. Students check the web for grades and course information. They also exchange email with instructors, assistants, and each other.
Where do your students do their out of work activities?
This is very dynamic - it depends on where they are at in the course, how much help is needed at that time, and what their current lifestyle/learning needs are. In general, many start in the computer lab and transition to their homes as they gain confidence.
What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid?
The great diversity of lifestyles and learning styles among my students - and a special emphasis on deep learning. The hybrid nature of the course is really part of a much larger picture - a dynamic distributed learning environment where students have a number of choices on how they can take the course. In essence, students can create their own customized learning environment and change it from week to week, based on their needs at any particular time.
How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled?
Here's where this arrangement gets really interesting. No F2F meetings are required (unless you count the Orientation and two tests). But the potential exists for as many as 48 meetings or more, depending on the needs of the student. Many of them take advantage of these opportunities; some do not. In most cases, the student decides how many are best for them.
What technologies support your hybrid?
Web, Email, & MIDAS. And something you might not expect - a traditional low-tech Virtual Writing Team that created and tested a GCC-published textbook ($9.50), also customized to our student's needs. This book allows students to proceed at their own pace. And our labs are set up to support ad-hoc questions.
What worked? What did not?
What did not work - All OE. All structured classrooms. All Internet. Using multiple publisher's textbooks with additional guides. Lack of interaction and support structures. What did work - giving the students choices and combining OE, structured, Internet, drop-in classes, dedicated pods, email groups, etc. to make that possible.
What would you do over/different?
Listen to the students more! A team approach to support the few hundred students in these classes. More staff training. Change the mix a little at a time.
How were you supported?
MIL (Maricopa Institute for Learning) Fellowship was the most significant catalyst. Freedom at GCC to try different approaches. Grant support. GCC's technology and staff.
