| What is your discipline and the title of your course? |
| English First Year Composition Hybrid ENG102
| What makes your course a hybrid? |
| My course is a hybrid because we meet half the time f2f and half the time online. For instance, the first class typically meets physically while the second class is conducted through online activities completed by a deadline later in the week.
| What kind of activities do students do in out of class time? |
| Out of class, my students are required to respond weekly to online discussion board questions that pertain to assigned readings or paper topics. They also participate in draft workshops in their online groups. They do Internet research, write papers, and do readings/activities from the textbook.
| Where do your students do their out of work activities? |
| Students do their out of class activities either at home, work, or at a campus computer lab—basically, wherever they have time and access.
| What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid? |
| I am interested in offering alternative ways of teaching to students. Students want the flexibility of taking online courses but seem to fare better with the f2f contact offered by hybrids. I also enjoy teaching in a different format and finding ways to better use technology.
| How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled? |
| I meet students f2f once a week during the semester.
| What technologies support your hybrid? |
| WebCT, Blackboard, Word, and PowerPoint.
| What worked? What did not? |
Students like the flexibility of only having to come to class once a week and completing other assignments online on their own schedule. I enjoy using the discussion board in the online portion of the course. Online teacher-to-student and student-to-student discussions as well as online group work can be very productive.
At times can be difficult to find the time to read and respond to student postings. The creation and maintenance of the online portion of the hybrid can be time consuming although with each course it improves.
| What would you do over/different? |
| I would like to include more training time for my students on how to use WebCT or Blackboard. I also want to connect the online portion of the course more consistently with the f2f classes and vice-versa. A rubric for evaluating online discussion board postings would be useful.
| How were you supported? |
| I was part of technology grant written by Dr. Nancy Matte, Chair of the English Department at Phoenix College, in order to develop a Hybrid ENG102. I have researched hybrid and online pedagogy and been supported/taught by technicians.
