| What is your discipline and the title of your course? |
| Dental Hygiene: DHE 119 - Head and Neck Anatomy
| What makes your course a hybrid? |
| Class meets F2F five times during the semester. The other weeks, the students are engaged in homework activities which are posted on their WebCT course page under "Lessons" and taking weekly online quizzes (also posted on WebCT).
| What kind of activities do students do in out of class time? |
| There are weekly homework assignments, weekly online quizzes, weekly puzzles with vocabulary words, utilization of the self-study course textbook, viewing and working through ADAM Interactive Anatomy "slide shows" I developed which follow the course textbook and help to create a 3-D image of the anatomical structures the students are learning.
| Where do your students do their out of work activities? |
| The majority have stated that they complete their assignments/reading at home. A few work in the library located in the Dental Building when they have down time during the day.
| What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid? |
| First, anatomy courses have a great deal of rote memorization which can be self taught. Second, not only is the material boring to teach at times, but students have also admitted that the material can be boring to sit through at times. Offering this course as a hybrid sparked the students' as well as the instructor's interest and curiosity to learn more on this topic than what was expected in the course.
| How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled? |
There are 5 F2F meetings: Class 1 - Introduction to Course, Course Calendar, Course Requirements, Introduction to WebCT, Introduction to ADAM Interactive Anatomy Class 2 - Lab activities using skull models, muscle models, TMJ models, tooth models Class 3 - In-class midterm Class 4 - In-class review of material using different game formats - Facial Bone Jeopardy, Muscles of Mastication Hollywood Squares, Name That Blood Vessel...... Class 5 - Final Exam
| What technologies support your hybrid? |
WebCT, ADAM Interactive Anatomy, Powerpoint, Crossword Construction Kit, Dreamweaver/Fireworks
I was also able to download some of the game formats I used from the Mariciopa Learning Exchange.
| What worked? What did not? |
What worked: homework assignments, online quizzes for the most part, puzzles, F2F activities, midterms and final exam What didn't work: Some students admitted to "blowing off" the course and assignments until the hours before they were due. They would not prepare for the online quizzes and would have their textbook in front of them to answer questions. These students admitted they needed the regimentation of a weekly in-person class.
| What would you do over/different? |
| More frequent midterms - students requested at least 2, if not 3 midterms. Make online quizzes timed - an absolute necessity next time!
| How were you supported? |
| I received a Technology in Instruction grant from Phoenix College which partially financially supported me in developing this course. I also received great support from the WebCT staff at PC and other faculty that have used ADAM for their hybrid courses. The LTD staff at PC was also helpful. I also received support and encouragement from my Department Chair.
