| What is your discipline and the title of your course? |
| Anthropology, ASB222 and ASB223 Ð Buried Cities and Lost Tribes
| What makes your course a hybrid? |
| This course has been taught as an online class, hybrid class (two ways) and a technology enhanced class. It is hybrid because some classes during the semester are not met so that students can prepare materials for presentations and/or classroom discussions.
| What kind of activities do students do in out of class time? |
| There are a combination of things that students will be responsible for outside of the classroom. These go beyond regular work that would be expected from students. Most of it has to do with research and preparation of materials for classroom presentations.
| Where do your students do their out of work activities? |
| Varies depending on what students have at home in the way of internet access and software for presentations (e.g. Powerpoint or iMovie, etc.)
| What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid? |
| Was originally tried as a hybrid course to explore how students would respond. After one semester, it was discontinued officially as a hybrid since students opted to attend optional Friday class periods by the end of the semester.
| How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled? |
| Students were expected to meet Monday and Wednesday with the Friday period optional. Students determined if they wanted to attend Friday class periods. I was always in the classroom during the Friday period. Students were hesitant to opt out of the Friday class for three weeks. Then began to use the freedom to not attend for about one month. As projects and work began to reach a deadline point, students were regularly opting to attend Friday and work in the classroom either in collaborative groups or for the express purpose of working with me. For the last month, everyone was attending the class on Friday Ð it was not a hybrid course anymore but a technology enhanced class like the others I was teaching.
| What technologies support your hybrid? |
| Web pages, Powerpoint, iMovie
| What worked? What did not? |
| The course ended up being just like the regular classes I was teaching. Students opted to not use the hybrid format and wanted to use class time just as I was allowing other students to use it. They found collaboration was easier if they came to the classroom and they found access to technology there as well. It was simply easier for them to complete their projects and work collectively given the learning environment of Buried Cities.
| What would you do over/different? |
| I will maintain the technology enhanced format for the course and not continue to use hybrid formats Ð students opted to utilize the learning environment that was already in place for the class rather than not attend class one period a week.
| How were you supported? |
| No support.
