What is your discipline and the title of your course?
My discipline is English and the title of my hybrid course is ENG102: Freshman Composition.
What makes your course a hybrid?
This is a hybrid course because students have options for learning which include face-to-face sessions and online sessions. Students can choose to replace any face-to-face session with online activities.
What kind of activities do students do in out of class time?
In class students can listen to live lectures, participate in hands on demonstrations of assignments, and recieve one-on-one help with assignments. Outside of class students can view Powerpoint lectures, and Producer presentations accompanied by interactive study guides. Students also have access to Instructional videos and discussion board interactions. Assessments and library research can be conducted in or out of class.
Where do your students do their out of work activities?
Student do their out of work activities in a variety of places, including home, the library, the computer commons, or the classroom (before or after their official class time). The classroom is available to student from 8-12pm MWF and students are invited to come early or leave late.
What was the reason for offering your course as a hybrid?
I wanted to offer students more freedom and choice in their studies. I also wanted to free up class time to offer more one on one time with struggling students. My hope was that the retention rate would improve because of the improved flexibility, variety of activities to address different learning styles and more interaction with students.
How many scheduled f2f meetings are there and how are they scheduled?
Students have the option of meeting f2f every class: MWF or they can choose to come to one f2f class M, W or F. The only requirement is that I see them once a week. I have three hybrid ENG102 classes that meet back to back MWF starting at 8-8:50, 9:9:50, and 10-10:50am with an open lab type feel.
What technologies support your hybrid?
I use Blackboard, Powerpoint, Producer, digital video and audio.
What worked? What did not?
The MWF schedule worked, but the TR did not. Having my classes scheduled back to back and in the same room works best. It allows for me to be available during a four hour period for students. Using CDs for course materials works better than trying to upload huge files to Bb.
What would you do over/different?
I'm constantly changing how I do things and reworking them. I'm not sure it there's anything I would do over differently.
How were you supported?
My division chair supported me by allowing me to try the hybrid format. He helped by buying software and hardware to create the modules. I got great support from the TLC and Amy MacPherson. She was able to answer questions and still helps me solve problems related to creating some of the distance learning elements.
