Ocotillo Action Groups 2004-2005
Under the new Ocotillo model 8 faculty members will work in pairs to lead the following Action Groups. They will define a year-long series of meetings, projects, and events to further our excperience and understanding in these areas. A major goal of the new model is have open participation in the Action Groups, so the activities will available to all Maricopa faculty and staff who are interested in them.
This first year's list of action groups are based upon the input of the current Ocotillo Chairs and the colleges they represent as well as the topics that have been of most interest at the MCLI Dialogue Days.
Read more about these new groups below- note that the charge/mission of these groups will be shaped at the May 2004 Ocotillo Retreat, but also, because of the Ocotillo structre, leaders of these groups can re-shape their direction as they proceed. If being a leader in any of these areas interests you, be sure to respond to our call for faculty before February 16, 2004.
Action Group 1: Hybrid Course Structures
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Rochelle Rodrigo (Mesa Community College)
- Debby Kurtz-Weidinger (Phoenix College)
This year, Ocotillo has presented a few good learning opportunities for faculty interested in merging the best of online with the best of the classroom, including an October 2003 Dialogue Day and November 2003 Epilogue Day. These "hybrids" range in structure between several extremes. The Co-Chairs of this Action Group will continue to research hybrid pedagogies, collecty current best practices at maricopa, develp resources to continue further campus implementation, and support faculty efforts in this area. Action Group 2: Learning Objects
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Donna Rebadow (Paradise Valley Community College)
- Lisa Young (GateWay Community College)
Reusable learning objects have become a new pedagogical phenomenon, and we have made some efforts to share instructional resources in the Maricopa Learning eXchange. Co-Chairs working with this Action Group will research and assemble the best learning object archives and work closely with a VERY new and emerging piece of software, callled Pachyderm. Pachyderm allows faculty to use a wide range of templates to pedagogically merge digital assets-- to actually build rich content from learning objects. This program has been pioneered by the education division of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The challenge to this group is how to maximize the potential of this software and its integration on our campuses and to make recommendations that will make this an effective tool for Maricopa. Action Group 3: Electronic Portfolios
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- David Weaver (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
- Dale Doubleday (Phoenix College)
Capturing and archiving examples of work has long been a standard in many academic areas. With current technologies, students and teachers are now able to integrate work e-portfolios into the curriculum. This Action Group will research current best practices of e-portfolios internally and externally-- extending their findings to the creative minds within Maricopa with the goal of expanding utilization of this wonderfully collaborative resource. We have a great internal resource in the ePortfolio tool developed at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and starting Februarly 2004, MCLI will be offering access to other Maricopa faculty and staff who want to experment with the Chandler-Gilbert system. Action Group 4: Emerging Technologies
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Roger Yohe (Estrella Mountain Community College)
- Jim Patterson (Paradise Valley Community College)
This Action Group will be the pioneers. They will research the newest trends and innovations in a specific technology, assess their potential impact on teaching and learning, and make recommendations on future directions. We are not talking about MIT level wearable computers or million dollar 3-D simulations- this group will look at a suite of available, accessible technologies that could help a large number of Maricopa faculty now. Future Ocotillo initiatives may emerge from the work of this Action Group. Each year, the Ocotillo May Retreat will help define the focus for this group. Possible technologies for consideration in 2004-2005 include Audio Narrated Web Slide Show tools, Weblogs, Digital / Streaming Video, etc. See also some of these exteral resources on future technologies:
