What's New in Online Learning at Our Campus

all participants
A round up of who's doing what (briefly!) using Mobile Technology (m-Learning) from one representative per site represented.

  • Scottsdale - currently installing two wireless connections starting at the library. Recently tested an airliner snyceyes with USB adapter for under $500.00.
  • Paradise Valley - installing one pilot mobile station in Chemistry Lab using a tablet PC.
  • Phoenix College - wireless built classroom being tested in the library. Two goals: the first is to setup ipod instruction using a tablet PC. The second is to test WEbCT new software. In addition, a question was posed about whether or not a standardized committee had been form for online learning. Unfortunately no one had any knowledge or information concerning a standardized committee for online learning.
  • Rio- testing ipod usage with MP3 since part of instruction is podcasting. KJAZZ and KBAQ podcasting already using Dell PDA can download entire course by screen. In addition, Rio is testing Trios (palm pilot with email and phone included). Rio is also blogging integrated cellular curricula, as well as testing direct result mobile technologies to see if they like it.
  • MCLI - September 16, 2005 Textbooks and Technology is an opportunity for faculty to dialogue with publishers, editors, and textbook and technology authors about teaching with technology. Faculty will benefit from listening to the production and distribution issues of technology-enhanced textbooks as understood by the publishing companies. We asking that you pre-register. There will be door prizes. Additionally, the MCLI is offering an incentive to anyone who carpools.

Frijolero - Inspiration and development of podcasting inspired Grant Project in Intercultural Communications

Holly McKinzie Beene (Glendale)
Holly received a 2005-2006 MCLI Learning Grant for to investigate the development of students' cultural awareness and intercultural communication competence through the use of personal narratives:

My goal is to put a human face on culture. I will explore the learning potential of students' first hearing and reflecting on a variety of authentic stories in digital "audio postcards." Students will then construct personal knowledge through identifying, composing, and recording a brief original story. The research question is: will personal stories constructed in capsulized audio correlate to students' ability to develop supporting detail for assignments and to retain course concepts?

The project evolved in the confluence of narrative tradition, my personal love of audiobooks,
experimentation with digital storytelling, and a random drive-time report from Youth Radio in May 2004 - a four-minute Border Story from Tijuana presenting a point of view sure to surprise and engage many students. It did. If the instructional use of audio, a medium students are clearly attuned to, can be used effectively as a simple storytelling device without the time commitments and technological challenges of multimedia, then the project could easily be extended to other courses and disciplines.

The suggested Handhelds devices used to capture the audio portion of the postcard are Ediral R-1-400 and iRiver 256-100. Suggested headsets/microphones used are Logitech desktop USB for $30.00, Plantronic DSP500 for $89.95 or Radio Shack 33-3013 for $25.00.

New OLG Feature!
We recorded Holly's presentation with an iRiver and are making it available as an MP3 file- in addition, this is part of a new feature we are adding to OLG meetings; recorded audio from meetings published as a podcast (more about OLG podcasts...)

Physical Sciences Mobile Lab

Pam Nelson, Geology Faculty (Glendale)
Mobile technology with wireless capabilities. Six Laptops computers are stationed inside of one mobile cart. There is a total of twenty-four laptops altogether. Students have access to studentsŐ account. Computers allow two students to be stationed at one computer. The laptop computers have removable wireless cards. Students do not have the ability to lease or check out the computers. The instructors are always present while students are using the computers. The computers are used in Geology, Physics, Physical Sciences, and Astronomy. The mobile technologies have reduced lab work by two hours.

Break! (10 min)

all
Enjoy some snacks while networking.

Biotechnology Grant Project

Michelle Shivnani, John Roberts (Glendale)
For academic year 2005-2006, Biology instructor Dr. James Tuohy, Ui Liu, and Jim received a $132,000.00 Prop 301 grant for support of a Biotechnology class. The grant includes purchase of 24 tablet PCs, data loggers and sensors for use in experimental data collection and analysis. One computer is the moderator and the other computers are clients. This technology is used for presentation material and graphs. Client software is one that instructors can lock. Wireless projection can be used anywhere. Tablet PC can be used outside of class if you have wireless range and you have a 802.11gb card.

Campus Wireless Project

Josh Krek (Glendale)
Glendale has been implementing campus wide wireless access. Students have access to their personal storage space, email, internet and course files from anywhere on campus. Statistics shows 600 users use the wireless connection a month. The wireless connection is controlled by one control radio, which is controlled by a central switch. Glendale keeps track of logged entries. Glendale has four wireless hovers.
