Charge

The Impact of Technology on Learning group is charged with engaging in dialogues on the impact of technologies on student learning and the changing roles of faculty. In addition, this group will investigate ideal technology-supported environments for optimal learning, such as the World Wide Web.

Highlights

This Ocotillo committee was born out of an April 1995, dialogue day on the impact of technology on teaching and learning. From that discussion among faculty, staff and students a number of key impacts on student learning were identified.

In a way, our work this year has been more of a special project than a traditional committee endeavor. Our purpose was to generate a questionnaire to assist Ocotillo in learning more about how faculty perceive the impact of technology on teaching and learning. Discussions in the single meeting of this committee resulted in a draft of questions and a target for the survey. We decided to focus on five colleges representing a range of technology use: South Mountain, Chandler-Gilbert, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa.

With the assistance of Alan Levine and Ken Costello, the final questionnaire was developed and subsequently piloted at the mid-year convocation. As part of the pilot, we requested comments and revision suggestions by the users. A revised questionnaire has now been developed and is awaiting final review.

What next?

After a final review of the questionnaire, it will be distributed to additional faculty. Results will be shared on our Ocotillo World Wide Web site and a dialogue day is being planned to discuss the results.
