Ocotillo Retreat 2002
Building the Vision
Café Discussions: A Schema for Hybrid Courses
[ issue on the table ] || [ the summary ] Pretend you are the "architect" selected to design a structure and description for a "Hybrid Course" at any Maricopa College. A hybrid would be some combination of face-to-face classroom learning with some amount of technology supported learning that takes place outside of scheduled class time.
This would include a definition that could be in all course catalogs so it is clear to students what these courses require. This would guide planning efforts for space, course design, and faculty support.
Use your Ocotillo Retreat blueprint paper to create a description for each kind of hybrid.
Remember: the focus of this activity is to create models of things we can build to address this issue.
- How many categories are needed?
- What are the characteristics of each?
- How would you define each so they are clearly understood by potential students?
- What would these mean for scheduling, planning, development, etc?
As a starting point, consider the four variations proposed from Scottsdale Community College:
- Web-presence course
- Web-enhanced course
- Web-centric course
- Web course
