Ocotillo Retreat 2002:
"Creating a New Culture of Teaching and Learning"
Alan led us in a discussion to discover what the "culture" is at Maricopa. He asked, as if he were "an alien visitor from Mars" for us as Maricopa residents, to provide statments that define the "culture" of Maricopa. He recorded these onto a computer as our audience responded.
Tragically, like it does, the technology failed, and Alan's computer lost the document. We have restored a few items from snippets seen in the photos, but can use your help to add to the list below.
The Maricopa Culture is...- We value diversity
- Everyone is a learner
- Community Based
- Intense caring
- Passion for discipline and sharing
- Enormous careativity supported by personal autonomy

- Not all learning occurs in classroom
- Not all teaching is done by faculty
- We are responsible for our own learning
- We value people who can adapt
- Teaching and learning in the broadest sense
- Learning is social
- Professional growth opp
- Unintentional discovery
