Ocotillo Retreat 2003 : about the retreat
Guess Who's Coming to Learn? Managing Expectations
What do we know about our students and their motivations for learning? Are our planning activities based on our own assumptions and experiences? There is plenty of literature about the various Gen-X, Gen-Y characteristics, but are we paying attention?
To better understand the attributes, desires, expectations of our current and future students, we have invited an expert in organizational and social demographics to help us figure out Who is Coming to Learn at Maricopa.
Jay Jamrog, executive director of the Human Resource Institute at the University of Tampa will provide an overview of the multi-generational aspects of the students coming to our classrooms.
We will explore the implications of these students needs and expectations on teaching and our use of technology for learning. In addition, we will engage in scenario building activities developed around the three Ocotillo Position papers written in the Spring of 2003. Do not expect just to sit there and listen to another dull PowerPoint presentation! We have a series of meaningful activites and will amke us of the Personal Response System for audience polling.
As in previous years, this Ocotillo Retreat is a tad different. We will be in town this year, with a new format of one day of active discussions (see agenda). The retreat will be at Rio Salado College (room 3B). Participation is limited to teams designated by Ocotillo chairs but un-claimed spots as of May 2, 2003 will be open to anyone else.
As in years past, we use the outcomes of these retreats to guide the activities and focus of Ocotillo for the next academic year. We invite you to participate in as much of this dynamic event as you can!
