Guess Who's Coming to Learn? Managing Expectations
PRS Activity: About the PRS Activity...
To engage the participants at the 2003 retreat, we used Personal Response System (PRS) technology to conduct instant polls of the audience. A PRS allows participants to provide responses to multiple choice type questions and the results are displayed dynamically and instantly tabulated. Below you can jump to the compiled results saved from the activity.
For this activity, we provided a few "warmup" questions to allow participants some practice with the PRS:
 - How many times have you checked your email since the end of the work day yesterday?
- How many electronic communication devices have you used today?
- What are your thoughts about wireless?
And then we moved into some informational and attidunal questions to gather information about perceptions of generational differences in our students...
- What is your generation?
- It is important for faculty to understand that generational markers directly impact their students' perceptions of quality of life.
- The attitude students have about work and play influences their attitudes about studying and grades.
 - Differences in social values and putting family first cause a problem in teaching and learning
- Finishing a degree is the important goal to emphasize with our students, not completing just the courses needed for achieving a career goal.
- Students of different generations blend as they learn together.
- Students expect their teachers to stay abreast of current technology and increase their skills.
- It is important for the faculty to understand student motivation in the balance among work/life/school.
- The strategies that do well for attracting and retaining a loyal and committed workforce can also be used to increase student retention.
