A Peek into Ocotillo Next Year
May 18, 2004, 8:00am - 3:30pm, Desert Botanical Garden
To give you a "map" of the new Ocotillo, here are some things you can expect to see next year. First, there will be active "Action Groups", each led by a pair of Faculty Co-chairs. These groups will create and promote a wide range of meetings, activities, and events that will be open to anyone interested in the topic.
Ocotillo Action Groups
- Hybrid Course Structures
This Action Group will continue to research hybrid pedagogies, collect current best practices at Maricopa, develop resources to continue further campus implementation, and support faculty efforts in this area.
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Rochelle Rodrigo (Mesa Community College)
- Debby Kurtz-Weidinger (Phoenix College)
- Learning Objects
"Reusable learning objects" have become a new pedagogical phenomenon, and we have made some efforts to share instructional resources in the Maricopa Learning eXchange. This Action Group will research and assemble the best learning object archives and work closely with a VERY new and emerging piece of software, called Pachyderm.
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Donna Rebadow (Paradise Valley Community College)
- Lisa Young (GateWay Community College)
- Electronic Portfolios
This Action Group will research current best practices of e-portfolios internally and externally-- extending their findings to the creative minds within Maricopa with the goal of expanding utilization of this wonderfully collaborative resource and enabling best uses of it for teaching, learning, and assessment.
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- David Weaver (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)
- Dale Doubleday (Phoenix College)
- Emerging Technologies
This Action Group will be the pioneers. They will research the newest trends and innovations in a specific technology, assess their potential impact on teaching and learning, and make recommendations on future directions. Future Ocotillo initiatives may emerge from the work of this Action Group.
2004-2005 Action Group Co-Chairs:
- Roger Yohe (Estrella Mountain Community College)
- Jim Patterson (Paradise Valley Community College)
Schedule
These groups will plan activities and publish a schedule for the 2004-2005 year. Some of the events/activities you can expect to see include:
- Virtual Ocotillo Kickoff (late September) Each pair of Action Group chairs will summarize their ideas for the year in a brief video that will be available from the Ocotillo web site. All Maricopa Faculty will be invited to tune in to the videos, and either use an online discussion board to contact the chairs of groups that interest them. This is your chance to "shop" around for a group that you may want to follow.
- Action Group Activities (October - early December) Ongoing series of events, meetings, workshops held at different college locations.
- Ocotillo Update Sessions (January 7, 2005) At the Faculty Convocation, there will be a session to get updates on the activities of all Action Groups.
- Action Group Activities (January - April) Ongoing series of events, meetings, workshops held at different college locations.
- Ocotillo Retreat / Technology Showcase (mid May 2005) Look for an open event to see demonstrations of instructional technologies used/developed across Maricopa. Action Groups will lead concurrent sessions and share their report of the first year's activity
Ongoing
The new Ocotillo Action Groups will use new communications technologies (weblogs, wikis, etc) to facilitate online discussions, resource development, and electronic publishing, so you can still participate without going to any events!
In addition, next year the Ocotillo Spotlight, which has been featuring highlights from the colleges the last two years, will now provide a monthly update on one of the Action Groups.
