CARL (Computerized Access Registration Line) ============================================ BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TOOL ------------------------- CARL is the touch-tone voice response system used within Maricopa It provides students with the opportunity to register for classes using a touch-tone telephone. CARL has been used by Maricopa since 1985. Recently, CARL was upgraded and will now allow for further expansion of the features it has to offer students. IMPORTANT FEATURES OF TOOL -------------------------- New students who have been admitted and continuing students may register by CARL for courses identified by the college. The student can call CARL, select the college and the semester they want to register for, and then add the course(s) they have selected. Students can also use CARL to drop their course(s) prior to the start of the course or to hear a copy of their class schedule. Maricopa plans to pilot credit card payment by CARL this Fall. Students will be able to select an option of paying for their course(s) after they are registered. Payment may be made by Master Card, Visa, or Discover. WHO WOULD USE THIS TOOL? ------------------------ Students, Faculty, Staff, and Administrators HOW DOES THE TOOL SUPPORT EFFECTIVE AND LEARNING? ------------------------------------------------- CARL will be piloted for use as a voice messaging service with Rio Salado's distance learning prograrn. Students will be able to call in and receive a pre-recorded message from the instructor for their course. They will also have the option of leaving a message for their instructor. At Mesa Community College, Carl will be piloted as a tool for establishing a bulletin board of activities. Students will call in and receive a pre-recorded bulletin message describing activities taking place at the college. Other suggestions for enhancements of CARL include providing the option to call CARL and verify grades; check to see if a class is open, closed, or canceled; and request transcripts and enrollment verifications. Some day students will also have access to other services such as Financial Aid. Additional suggestions for uses of touch-tone voice response technology within Maricopa are welcomed!
