INFORM ====== BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TOOL ------------------------- An on-line (l.e., VAX or Unix) database program which provides a variety of functions for faculty and students; its goals include: a) Easy access to inforrnation, b) Communication between teacher and student, c) Communication between Adrnissions and teacher, d) Ability to track student progress IMPORTANT FEATURES OF TOOL -------------------------- + On-line grade-book + Electronic messaging + Office hours information + Progress letters + Electronic withdrawals and reinstatements + Class rosters kept up-to-date with admissions information + Reporting features + For OE/OE courses, electronic extensions of end date + Planned enhancement: electronic final grade transmittal + Easy to use; on-line help WHO WOULD USE THIS TOOL? ------------------------ The Tool is designed to be used by faculty to maintain records and by students to access information about their own progress. There is also a provision for selected non- teaching employees (e.g., student graders) to be able to access the system and do work under the direction of faculty. HOW DOES THE TOOL SUPPORT EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING? ---------------------------------------------------------- + Provides faculty and students easy access to information about the student. + Simplifies communication between faculty and student, via progress letters and on-line messages. + Works with SIS to keep section information updated and to exchange information between teacher and SIS personnel. + Makes it possible for faculty to track student progress, even for OE/OE students who have individual "semester" dates. + Makes it possible for the student to track his/her own progress in a course.
