SIS (Student Information Sytem) =============================== BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TOOL ------------------------- The Maricopa Colleges' Student Information System (SIS) is a large-scale computerized systern developed as several diverse yet integrated computerized applications. SIS delivers the information essential to college operations and management for "students," facilities, personnel, Curriculum," while interfacing with many other large-scale computerized systems. The primary goal of SIS is accurate and timely recording, maintaining, and responding of information to provide essential support to college management for their effective utilization of resources. The SIS record keeping supports the annual flow of 180,000 students in Maricopa's nine colleges, educational center, skill center and governmental reporting. IMPORTANT FEATURES OF TOOL -------------------------- The Student Records area within SIS contains and refers to information which is used to support student registration and records functions. Some functions include a district- wide Course Inventory, Schedule of Classes, Student Registration, Grading, Veteran Benefits, Transcripts, Social Security Benefits, Athletes, Honors, FTSE Reporting, and related system inteQctions. Additional sub-systems built within SIS to support the student include the following areas: Billing and Receivable, (BR) also known as Cashiers; Course Schedule, Allocation, and Monitoring (SAM); Flnancial Aid Management, (FAMS) also known as "Student Aid"; Job Placement, also known as "Placement; Monitoring Academic Progress, (MAPS) also known as "Degree Audit." All SIS applications have the following commonly defined functional support features: a) extensive on-line and batch processes supporting large volumes of information, b) standardized on-line operations and screen design to simplify training process for persons who need to access multiple applications, c) on-line help available at four levels without interrupting opera77tors current operation, d) on-line printing of many special forms and any on-line screen at any printer within the MCCCD computer network WHO WOULD USE THIS TOOL? ------------------------ Students, Faculy, Administrators, Financial, Research area, and anyone who needs information on students, courses, fees, facilities, etc. HOW DOES THE TOOL SUPPORT EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING? ---------------------------------------------------------- As a database, SIS maintains college Records for students, courses, faculty, and facilities. The data maintained by SIS enhances ETL by serviing as an efficient means to schedule students and resources.
