A Journey Worth Taking
Three Questions About Instructional Technology
(College Activity)

Each college will look at their existing processes for planning and supporting the instructional use of technology, state where they would like to go with it, and list the issues that will arise on that journey. Plan on spending 30 minutes on each question so that you at least begin the discussion on all three.

Your assignment is to have three flip chart papers (one per activity) posted on the ballroom walls by 8:30 AM Thursday morning. Write your team name on each of the flip chart pages and select a spokesperson to present your work later.

  1. "Where Are We Now with Instructional Technology?"
On flip chart paper, draw a schematic diagram or write an outline describing the present structures/committees for planning and supporting instructional technology at your college. Who is involved? How are decisions made? What are its strengths?

  2. "Where Do We Want to Go with Instructional Technology?"
Using the metaphor of the Jigsaw puzzle, list on flip chart paper three columns with your "wishes", "nightmares", and "questions" to be asked along the way.

  3. "How Do We Get There?"
Do we know how technology is affecting student learning? What is the role of students? "Hi-tech / Hi Touch" -- How do we provide human resources to support faculty and staff? What works well with your present planning process? What needs to be done better? What is the focus of your planning? Is it clear? What are the emerging issues and strategies for dealing with rapid change? How will we know when we "get there"?

Pick 3 to 5 questions (or add your own) that are most important to your college. Record on flip chart paper the issues that may arise in answering these questions.
