A Journey Worth Taking
Instructional Technology and Community:
A Conversation with Steve Gilbert

This conversation with Steve Gilbert included members of the Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board, Vice-Chancellors and staff from the District Office.
  • If computer is a requirement, then financial aid will pay-at same institution. Should we have more neighborhood centers? Partnerships with schools, external communities, CBOs etc.?
  • Issue/Problem: from a community stand point:
    • common computer standards vs. choices across district.
    • should we have edicts/strict standards to solve some of infrastructure issues?
    • i.e. if one goes from MCC to PC to...will they expect the same technology(ies)?
  • What do we do with charter schools? what are our relationship? Some schools have better technology solutions than us vs. others on the other end. Huge variation of experience and access Kyrene vs. Murphy, Scottsdale vs. Creighton, Dysart, Isaac?
    • i.e., Scottsdale Bond Referendum
    • larger than MCCCD - proportionately
  • What expectations do our external communities have about technology and learning? MCCCD as a learning organization?
  • Some of our students are coming with expectations of access and use of technology as part of learning tool
  • What about our "other" students who have not had access (i.e. middle school?)
  • What should be our connection now with technology (public schools)?
  • How does technology fit Maricopa's broad end statement?
    • technology not an end but a means to learning
    • technology as a competency
    • (?)separate end statement for students and graduates
  • As a learning organization, Maricopa Community Colleges exists in order that the community has effective, innovative, learner-centered, flexible, and life-long educational opportunities.
Broad End Statement

  • What do our employers want?
    • job market has changed
    • new types of jobs; different skill set requirements
  • of our "informally" trained students have left to great jobs
    -- lose good student help-support
  • ?Certification
-- part of training-work for MCCCD
  • Placement of our highly trained students into less fortunate schools/community
  • Curriculum not changing as fast as we should be
  • Job market requirement changed overnight
  • Have people in B/J sit on TLTRs
  • Disciplines all trying to teach skills - wanting piece of pie...
    • How do we collaborate vs. compete?
    • i.e. librarians wanting to teach Web/Internet as do computer faculty
  • How do we keep our faculty current?
    • based on changing needs
      • hire people who are comfortable with change
      • community is asking for this change
      • different from expectations of the academy
      • community of student should drive change.
      • technology can drive the change that's required/needed by community
  • Can we use technology to build community...that builds communication/connection to/with community?
  • How can we put more faculty into the high tech environment
    • renewal/internships
  • Internships from the community/B/I::
    • "glamorousness" of Community College vs. University environment for interns from private sector
    • places like Motorola University could provide us with some learning to incorporate into our mainstream curriculum
  • MCCCD is considered highly nationally sometimes we forget this
  • How does tech. support flexibility?
  • issue: We do not have Ôin-tact' students? - fluidity of our student population.
  • choices to students (about learning experiences)
  • Issue: inflexibility of facilities
  • offer courses based on students' learning styles
    • could technology assist
    • students do not always know learning style
    • need to help student "learn" other styles
    • information to students in schedule/catalog that course will be offered in a certain mode
      • i.e. distance, video
      • students still don't know even after registration
  • ability to respond to changes
    • how can technology help?
  • should we get more into non-credit program?
  • How do we change the mind set of our people to change?
    • internal and external communities
Life-long education opportunity
  • We can offer opportunities to life long learning
  • The learning experience itself?
  • Some people need structure of learning experience vs. distance learning option
  • What can life long learners contribute to MCCCD?
  • What contributions can life long learners make in the classroom?
    • many have advanced degrees
Access to students to technology?
  • Existing directions now: labs with class open labs, lab part of library (still campus-based)
  • What is the constituency for those who cannot get to a campus?
  • Should we be concerned?
  • Distance learning perceived for rural communities but also have urban communities who do not have access to campus?
  • Time an issue
    • what hours of availability of technology?
  • "Single parents who don not have time or transportation"
    • what happens for these? week-end classes match bus schedules
  • Do we have a lending program for technologies?
  • Should we require computer use/access?
