Approx. 55 lines from Alan Levine of Maricopa Community College offering some observations about institutional planning for education and the role of information technology in the process. He includes a URL for the "National Center for Technology Planning." Levine is also asking for your help in finding examples of relevant plans and models for planning processes. He will summarize what he learns and post the compilation to AAHESGIT within a few weeks. Please help.) Steve Gilbert =============================================== We are helping the 10 colleges in our District (Maricopa Community College System) to form TLTR-like local Roundtables. One of our charges is that each of them develop an on-going process of instructional-technology planning that is inclusive in participation and is focused on student learning. Each local planning group is chaired by a faculty member and supported by the Dean of Instruction at the college. Steve Gilbert will be visiting us in May to help. Each of our colleges already has some sort of process and committee structure in place. We are finding varying definitions and concepts of the word "plan" (Is it a verb? Is it a noun? Is it both?). Rather than prescribe the structure of a plan (as if there is a recipe), at our May Retreat we are going to begin identifying what the basic elements of such a plan should be. The plans will grow from our collective expertise and experience. The "Guidebook for Developing an Effective Instructional Technology Plan" is an excellent resource from the National Center for Technology Planning (see Web: http://www.nctp.com/ ), and we have been pulling up other examples from Web searching. Quite a bit more formal planning seems to have been done with k-12 schools than in higher ed. I am curious to know what the elements of such plans are at other institutions -- beyond the jargon of "student-centered, blah blah", what are the details? We know we want our planning to look three years into the future and to address: - support/training/faculty development, - upgrading and re-allocating technology, - classroom technology, - distance learning, [and the big kahuna:] - just how do we measure the impact of the technology on students? Please help us by sending directly to me copies of planning documents from your own institution; or send me the URLs for such documents. We are especially interested in plans that are publicly available from the Web and/or in print. Of course, working drafts and more finished versions of institutional plans that include discussion of educational uses of information technology will be appreciated; but so will descriptions of planning PROCESSES that you have found effective. [As customary with AAHESGIT, please post more general responses to this message directly to AAHESGIT@LIST.CREN.NET.] I would be glad to share a summary of what I learn from your responses within the next few weeks. Thanks for your help. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Information below last updated: 4/27/97 TLTR Summer Institute -- July 11-16, 1997 Phoenix, Arizona Steven W.
