This is the first year the group has met, and we started by devising a mission statement and setting first-year goals. We meet every three weeks, and meetings usually consist of a short tech demonstration, lunch, and agenda items - defining, and discussing how to carry out particulars that relate to the goals below. We have found it useful to assign the tasks to "action teams" of no more than three people. The action teams report back with specific recommendations, and after some adjustments made with group feedback, we pass on our recommendations to the Dean of the College (we're formally known as the "Dean's Task Force for Teaching and Technology.") Hope this helps - following is mission statement and first-year goals. MISSION STATEMENT: Through research and informed discussion, the group will provide guidance and coordination for efforts to use technology in teaching, advising and academic research. FIRST-YEAR GOALS 1) Define uses of technology in teaching consistent with MBC's institutional goals and mission. What do we most want to gain? What do we most cherish and want not to lose? 2) Identify and support people on campus who are effectively using technology in their teaching, and share that information with interested faculty. 3) Identify and support the development of faculty who are just beginning to use technology. 4) Identify methods for broadening and deepening appropriate and effective uses of technology in teaching. Develop specific list of hardware, software, training and other needs. 5) Work in collaboration with Computer Services and other units to ensure that academic needs are met within the college planning processes 6) Research successful uses of technology in teaching on other campuses. Evaluate appropriateness and feasibility for implementation at MBC and identify areas of collaboration with other institutions. -- Jeff Overholtzer Assistant Professor of Communications Mary Baldwin College Staunton, Va. 24401 jover@cit.mbc.edu (540) 887-7079
