Into the Future: What is IT?
Diana Oblinger
February 26-27, 2002
The primary focus of the Maricopa Community Colleges is not on information technology- it is on education. However, Maricopa, like all post-secondary institutions, is challenged to harness the potential benefits of information technology (IT) in support of its core mission. But what is information technology? IT refers to many different technologies, services and systems that provide the means to achieve our educational and service goals. IT is not a single "thing" nor does it eliminate the need for people. IT undergrids the entire enterprise, encompassing hardware, software, services, support and users. And, no matter how powerful today's technologies seem, next month's or next year's are sure to provide even more opportunities.
Maricopa Community Colleges have a history of investing for success in information technology. IT- and those who use it- can be competitive differentiators for education, for business and for individuals. This session will build on Maricopa's tradition and look into the future for what lies next.

Education Modeling Language (EML)
"To date no comprehensive notational system exists that allows one to codify units of study (e.g. courses, course components and study programmes), in an integral fashion. EML is the first system to achieve precisely this. EML describes not just the content of a unit of study (texts, tasks, tests, assignments) but also the roles, relations, interactions and activities of students and teachers... EML allows to model a variety of pedagogies for education. One may use EML to model for instance a competence based pedagogy, problem based learning, performance support, self study packages or even traditional face-to-face teaching."
