Back to the Future: After WYSIWYG, What is the Next Killer App?
Carl Berger
10:30 AM - 3:00 PM, December 5-6, 2002
Carl Berger will help us look to the future and try to predict what instructional technology will look like.
By looking at the past, current research, and a little bit of "future whimsy", we may be able to identify what that next "killer app" ("killer application", see a definition from whatis.com) may be. And he intends to not just talk about it, but to show some possible candidates. Followup discussion activities will focus on how we get to that future, and what we may need to discard to arrive there.

1:00 PM - 2:15 PM Afternoon Discussion Activity
"How Do We Get to the Future"
So once we have an idea of what the next Killer App may be, how do we get there? What do we need to get rid of from the way we do things now? What lessons did we do in the past to make a jump to the future?" Using a technique know as Nominal Group Process, we will develop our ideas on our own Killer Apps (see results) and what the barriers are to developing them.
(all participants)
2:15 PM - 2:30 PM break
2:30 PM - 3:00 PM Q&A with Carl
Feedback and followup questions for Carl. What have we learned?
3:00 PM - 3:15 PM Closing
Next steps, complete evaluations. College teams plan strategy for how to take information back to their campus.

"In an interview with editor James L. Morrison, Carl Berger discusses the
potential of integrated software development in instructional technology.
Through his concept of the "killer app" - a software application that
assimilates a range of diverse functions - Berger anticipates a future in
which technology becomes further integrated in the daily experience of

Warchalking
"Warchalking is the practice of marking a series of symbols on sidewalks and walls to indicate nearby wireless access. That way, other computer users can pop open their laptops and connect to the Internet wirelessly. It was inspired by the practice of hobos during the Great Depression to use chalk marks to indicate which homes were friendly."
