A Taste of Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational model which involves students in self directed learning as they solve complex, real-world problems.
PRESENTERS
HOWARD BARROWS, M.D., Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medical Education, Southern Illinois University Medical School
ANN KELSON, MS, Associate Director, Problem-Based Learning Curriculum, Southern Illinois University Medical School
Barrows and Kelson are international experts in PBL with twenty years of experience using the PBL model of learning with their students.
OVERVIEW
On the first day, following a brief introduction, the PBL process will be demonstrated with a group of Maricopa students. The students will be introduced to a problem and will work together to seek a solution, receiving guidance from one of the speakers, acting as a master tutor. During the demonstration, the other speaker will provide a running commentary on the PBL process going on in the group, the strategies being used by the tutor, the interactions among group members, and the pedagogical implications.
On the second day, the students will return and complete the PBL process with the master tutor. Workshop participants will discuss PBL, particularly how PBL can be used in the classroom.
