Would someone provide a definition of Optimal Foraging Strategy?
There are several components to optimal foraging strategy:
available resources
desired resources
ease of obtaining resources
People will choose a location to reside based on required (read desired) resources. They will then locate themselves nearest to the most commonly used resource based on it's availability(seasonality) and abundance. The whole idea is to exploit the resources as much as possible with the least investment of time/energy.
While I agree with Russ's defintion, I don't believe it goes far enough. Optimal foraging can only be accomplished by an intimate knowledge of the regional factors that affect food resources. Knowing when rains are abundant, floods occur, fish migrate, or antelope are in the area are an intregral component to the strategy. This kind of lifestyle requires people to know their ecosystem and respect its sensitivities, so that continued existance is possible and abundantly provided for.
