Huntington's Disease in Venezuela

How does one track a deadly hereditary killer?

Huntington's disease is an inherited neurological disorder, causing progressive loss of muscular control and memory and eventual death. Dr. Nancy Wexler of Columbia University has been one of the main players in an attempt to solve some of the mysteries of this disease.

In particular, she has studied cases of Huntington's disease in a group of geographically adjacent Venezuelan villages in South America since 1979. In these villages, along the shores of Lake Maracaibo, many extended family members have the same disease. Wexler was interested in collecting extensive family pedigrees -- who's related to whom -- to determine how this disease is transmitted genetically from one generation to the next.
