This study was conducted by Dr. Newcomb and reported in the "American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, (1987).
A group of 3,000 California students in the 7th, 9th, and 11th grades served as subjects. These subjects were first measured on a number of behaviors and attitudes. Their scores on these measures were then correlated with a composite substance abuse score (a measure of drug use).
The risk factors of early alcohol intoxication, perceived adult drug use, and perceived peer approval of drug use seemed to be the most strongly related to substance abuse in school children.
