Biologists with the Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology were interested in answering the above question. Prior to this current study, seed-preference charts, distributed by the laboratory, were based more on hearsay than on any systematic scientific study.
The scientists decided to do a sort of nationwide seed preference survey. Bird-feeding enthusiasts around the country will be sent three pieces of cardboard, each with a different type of seed on it (sunflower, red milo and white millet). These bird watchers will then record the numbers and species of birds and their choices of seed types during five-minute periods. Completed data forms will then be returned to the lab for collation and analysis.
