The producers of SimEarth refer to it as "The Living

can control the atmosphere, the configuration of land
masses, water supply and temperature.
They can explore Earth Science concepts such as:
- plate tectonics and continental drift
- erosion
- meteorological events
- the formation and composition of the ocean floor.
Players can also explore Life Science concepts such as:
- evolution
- diversity and adaptation
- classification of life-forms
- effects of solar energy on life forms.
SimEarth is also useful for teaching Social Science concepts such as:
- the relationship between energy usage and population
- the factors that affect quality of life
- the "nuclear winter" scenario.
Promotional materials explain that SimEarth was,
"[i]nspired by James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, [and
therefore] looks at the world as one interrelated living
organism offering you the ultimate experience in planet
management."
