Using a movie studio metaphor, Studio 1151 is a pilot project where teams of teachers and students learn teamwork, project management, and communication skills while designing an instructional technology application. The "team" reports to the "Studio", which is actually the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction. An on-line Studio Guidebook, provides specific planning documents and information for their project. Each week, the teams electronically submit a journal report.
Negative Reinforcement University was designed by a team from Scottsdale Community College in Spring 1996. Student team members Lynda Takeda, Derek Cline, Ted Jones, David Luce, and instructor Bernie Combs, assisted by Studio facilitator Karen McNally, developed the flowcharts, created storyboards, scripted content, and acquired photographic and video media used in the final product. It was a group decision to go for a more explorative, game-like design. Studio technologist Alan Levine authored the program using Macromedia Director, using 3D graphics created by Kurt Leinbach. Originally intended for distribution on CD-ROM, the entire application now is on the web, using some clever Lingo and JavaScript to psuedo-stream the content via Shockwave. While we are very pleased with the product, the real and achieved goal of the project was for students and faculty to engage in a non-traditional, real-world project. |
