What we want you to do now is to do some quick "surfing" to try to find at least 4 web sites in each of our 4 "flavors." You should scan the sites quickly-- if a site responds slowly, or is marginally relevant, then move on! Remember, you are looking for sites most appropriate to the area that you teach. For each flavor, we have created a worksheet that contains some sites that offer good starting points to locate these web sites. We do not know where all the web sites are; what we've done is to compile so very reliable places to start finding web sites in your subject area.
We suggest that you use the Bookmark or Favorites feature of your web browser to mark your finds. But you can also cut and paste web site addresses to a text file or (horrors!) write them down on a piece of paper. You may want to print a paper copy of each worksheet to record your work.
worksheet 1Full Web Courses. Look for courses in your discipline that are taught completely via the web. Sometimes these courses have access restricted to those that have registered (i.e paid) for the courses; for our later activities you will want to have some that offer at least partial access to the course content.
worksheet 2Course Materials. These may be as simple as descriptions of a course and/or a syllabus. Often an instructor will include ancillary material or references that may assist students. Course materials may not be easy to find and they may blend into what we would describe as a web activity. One approach is to visit university and college web sites and browse your way into different academic departments.
worksheet 3Web Activities. A web activity can include almost activity that is part of a course. At the low end might be things as bland as HTML versions of assignment handouts. The more exciting uses are ones that include using information available via the Internet.
worksheet 4Web Resources. This might be considered one of the broadest categories, but try to find the key reference sites in your subject area that potentially may offer a data source that you could design an activity around. Be sure you have at least bookmarked or written the URLs down for a few sites in each "flavor" (you will need these later).
Our first flavor to find web sites is a taste of full blown courses on the web.
