Key Components of Service Learning
When designing a service learning component for a course, faculty must be careful to include:
- a clear connection between the service and course competencies or objectives
- a relevant experience with a carefully structured assignment which includes:
- clear objectives, specific directions, and evaluation criteria
- critical thinking and/or problem solving
- accountability (time card or signature verification)
- reflection in writing (journal, report, reaction paper, project, speech, ...)
- sharing and celebration
- a meaningful contribution to the community
