SyRIS Wins National Award!
Dear Dr. Pommerville,
Congratulations! The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Awards and Recognitions Committee has selected your application entitled The Systemic Reform In Science (SyRIS) Project as the recipient of the 2003 Gustav Ohaus Award (College Level) for Innovations in Science Teaching. These awards recognize the highest quality in science teaching and learning. They honor science initiatives that have developed innovative programs in new curriculum design, instructional methods or techniques, unique organization, administrative patterns, new approach to laboratory activities, or other enhanced learning activities for students.
The award will be presented to you during the 2003 NSTA National Convention in Philadelphia, PA (March 27-30) at the NSTA Awards Banquet on Friday, March 28, 2003. I hope you will be able to attend.
I look forward to meeting you in Philadelphia.
Sincerely,
Frank Zuerner
Chair, NSTA Awards and Recognitions Committee
To all faculty, administration, and staff who supported SyRIS:
This award goes first and foremost to all the Maricopa SMET faculty and staff who contributed their innovative thinking and put in more time and effort than required to make the SyRIS project a model for interdisciplinary science reform. You made the project what it is and I applaud all of you.
In helping to make the project real, I wish to thank again: Chancellor Fred Gaskin, Vice Chancellor Anna Solley; MCLI past and present directors, Marybeth Mason and Maria Harper-Marinick; the idea originators, Alfredo de los Santos, Naomi Story, and Carol Hale; and the Deans of Instruction for their tremendous financial and moral support of SyRIS. Without this in-kind support, the SyRIS project would not have been successful. It exemplifies what a community of academic professionals can do when they put their minds together!
Cheers and bravo to everyone! I hope we again have the opportunity to work together!
Jeffrey Pomerville, mcil
