science module gallery...
This is our collection of the classroom/lab interdisciplinary science modules designed, developed, and piloted by Maricopa Community College science faculty participating in the Systemic Reform In Science (SyRIS) project. See also our module search tool.
2000-2001 SyRIS Science Module Collection
Catch the Waves
Chandler-Gilbert Community College
(Biology, Mathematics)
This module develops concepts related to water, sound, and light waves. Math students collect/analyze data and make models using case studies of tidal and sound waves. Biology students use a case study involving light waves and the process of photosynthesis. Students use Blackboard technology to form a community of learners to further explore the interdisciplinary nature of waves.
Cells As Digital Images - An Investigation
Estrella Mountain Community College
(Biology, Allied Health, Mathematics)
A module created for the collaboration between biology and mathematics students. Student research teams use biological, mathematical, and research methods to identify types of blood cell diseases. They make predictions and verify hypotheses using qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Don't Drink the Water
GateWay Community College
(Biology, Water Resources, Chemistry, Mathematics)
Students explore water quality issues using problem-based learning. Elements of chemistry, biology, hydrology, math, and communications skills are embedded within the course constructs, providing a real-world connection between concept and application.
Energy and Thermodynamics
Glendale Community College
(Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
A hands-on module designed to enable biology, chemistry, and physics students to construct the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics from concrete experiences.
Global Warming
Paradise Valley Community College
(Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics)
A module that incorporates a personal energy and resource use audit to ascertain a student's general impact upon the environment. Working in teams, they analyze individual and group data to develop a broader perspective of the possible anthropogenic effects of climate change.
The Problem with Pesticides
Mesa Community College
(Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Geology)
Each of the activities in this module is directed at studying a pesticide from the perspective of a different discipline. Areas of particular emphasis include biology, geology, agriculture, and chemistry. The lab activities are designed to encourage students to develop and test their own hypotheses in an active learning setting.
Ultraviolet Radiation: From Sun to Skin
Scottsdale Community College
(Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics)
This module presents central concepts of radiation: its origins, characteristics, and interaction with the earth's atmosphere and living organisms. The laboratory component includes experiments to measure light intensity with application of the Inverse Square Law and to examine the effects of ultraviolet light on cultures of pigmented yeast that have been covered with and without sunscreen.
Water Purification
South Mountain Community College
(Geology, Chemistry)
This module introduces geological, physical, and chemical concepts for separating contaminating materials and substances in water. It uses the method of inquiry at the introductory, fundamental, or preparatory level and is intended for non-science majors in introductory science courses.
