Computer Set-up...
To conduct a webhound workshop, you need to arrange for uses of a facility with networked computers capable of running a web browser (This could be Windows, Macintosh, or Unix workstations). Each should have direct access to the Internet or access via a PPP/SLIP modem connection. You could use any web browser software, although the webhound is most fond of NetScape Navigator and Internet Explorer will do as well.
It is easiest to demonstrate if you have access to an instructors workstation connected to a computer projection system so that you can demonstrate all of the steps. You should also have available something to write examples, i.e. a chalkboard, whiteboard, flip chart, or overhead projector.
Webhound files...
This guide is available at:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/webhound/guide.html
You can access the webhound materials directly from our web:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/webhound/
You should bookmark this web page on every computer. This makes it easy for the participants to quickly jump back to the lesson contents. To set up a bookmark in NetScape, you can do this by:
- Select Open Location... from the File menu.
- In the dialog box, type the Internet address:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/webhound/
- Click the Open button.
- When you connect to the webhound's main page, select Add Bookmark from the Bookmarks menu. Whenever you select this item again from the Bookmarks menu, you will return to this page.
Before the workshop begins, all of the computers should have this screen available.
For better performance, we recommend that you download the webhound files and then store them locally on the hard drive of each computer. Your workshop will run a lot ore smoothly if all of the particpants are not hitting a web server at once. We offer the files in archives for both Macintosh and Windows systems. All are stored as compressed archives and will require the appropriate tools for decompressing (we are fond of Aladdin's
free StuffIt Expander for Macintosh and Windows).
The instructions for downloading these archives will vary depending
on which web browser you are using. First check
your browsers Preferences section to make sure that it
is configured to launch de-compression applications for files ending in:
- ".zip" for Windows zip archives
- ".sit.hqx" for Macintosh BinHex/StuffIt archives

To enter the webhound from locally stored files:
- Select Open File... or Open Local... from the web browser File menu.
- Use the dialog box's buttons to locate the webhound folder, and then select the file called "index.html" (Macintosh), "index" (Windows 95), or "index.htm" (Windows 3.1). This should present the webhound's opening screen.
- Add a Bookmark this web page (as described above).
Printed Materials...
You may wish to print copies of each lesson (we refer to the learner's materials as "the webhound guide"). To get paper copies, just go to each web page and select Print from the File menu.
At a minimum, you should print copies of the 4 worksheets (#1 ~~ #2 ~~ #3 ~~ #4) and the survey.
