Materials
- Webhound guide (print version)
- Multimedia Computer connected to Internet
- Web browser software
- Whiteboard, flipchart, or other means to write text for the participants to see
Approximate Time
This section should take around 15 minutes.
Procedures
- Tell the participants that they will get some experience using the web browser while they view some sample sites that are very good... or very bad.
- Make sure that everybody is looking at the screen that has the Webhound home page on it. Instruct them to click the mouse on the blue, underlined link that says "The Good, Bad, and Bandwidth-Hogging Ugly"
You have just completed the one crucial skill for navigating the Internet- "Click on the blue text!"
- Tell the participants to spend the next 10 minutes exploring the sites listed on this page. Demonstrate how you can follow a hypertext link and use the browser's "back" button to return to "The Good, Bad, and Bandwidth-Hogging Ugly"
Find two web sites that really excite you and find one that is really awful, in your opinion.
- When 10 minutes have passed, have the participants pair up and discuss what they found and their reasons for labeling a site as "Good" or "Bad". You may ask for volunteers to share their results with the whole group.
Did anyone have trouble connecting to a site? What might have be the problem? (too many people trying for the same site; the site may be no longer available)
