Materials
- Webhound guide (print version)
- Work Sheets
- Multimedia Computer connected to Internet
- Web browser software
The computers should be ready with the web browser program launched and connected to the opening screen for the webhound guide. The steps to connect were described in the Material and Set-up section.
Approximate Time
This section should take around 5 minutes.
Procedures
- Tell the audience that they will be learning how to use the World Wide Web, or "the web", to locate specific information of interest to them. You may want to ask for a show of hands for how many:
- have experience using the Internet
- use electronic mail
- have explored the World Wide Web
If some have used the web before, you might add
Has anyone tried to search for information on the web? Were you successful? Why/Why not?
These questions can help you gauge the experience level of the audience.
- Reiterate how the Internet is one hand like a giant library, with a vast amount of information resources. Also remind them, that unlike a library, there is not a single, comprehensive catalog for everything there.
- To get through the webhound, you may have to establish ground rules for getting the group's attention. Often there is a natural tendency to explore the computer (which to some degree we want to encourage) but may cause them to miss vital information. One of the more approach is, when you start talking, ask them to place the computer mouse on top of the monitor.
- If the group is fairly skilled in Internet and time is limited, you may elect to go directly to the first lesson Scouting the Range. The first two units are optional, but offer an opportunity for participants to become more comfortable using the browser software. We recommend with any group to do at least one of the first two lessons.
